The role of context of situation In interpreting the meaning Of some idiomatic expressions
Abstract
The present paper seeks to shed light on the role of context of situation in
interpreting the meaning of some idiomatic expressions. It is observed clearly that an
idiomatic expression poses two kinds of meaning if it is uttered in different situations.
This paper proves that one situation leads to the literal meaning of the idiomatic
expression, which makes the idiomatic expression lose its idiomaticity. It also
proves that another situation leads to the pragmatic meaning of the idiomaticity.
However, the pragmaticality of some idiomatic expressions completely exists if the
idiomatic expressions are uttered in their appropriate situations. After explaining the
literal and non-literal aspects of the expressions, we proposed Arabic
renditions for them.
